The Sound of Silence

Published March 12, 2012 by Stuff My Brain Thinks

So, this morning I woke up with a cloud over my head.  Not sure why.  I had a wonderful day yesterday.  I mean, I know it’s Monday but since I love going to work I don’t think it’s that.  Today should be the same as any other at the office.  I go, do my work, drink tea, and listen to music.  What more could you ask for in a job 🙂  Rog is working 10-3 which means we have the evening together.  That’s a good thing.  I cannot come up with any reason for this dark cloud, but one thing I am sure of is I need to figure out how to get it to move on.

Maybe a little golden oldies will do the trick.  Music is like medicine for the soul.  Each genre does something different for me.  Golden oldies makes me feel good inside.  It Gives me a feeling of connectedness to the world.  Another of my favorites is the sounds of nature channel on Tv.  It’s almost entirely instrumental and it works beautifully when I read, write, or meditate.

The Sound of Silence

Hello darkness, my old friend
I’ve come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence

In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone
‘Neath the halo of a street lamp
I turn my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence

And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people maybe more
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never shared
No one dared
Disturb the sound of silence

“Fools,” said I, “you do not know
Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you”
But my words like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells of silence

And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said “The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls
And whispered in the sound of silence

  • I learned all the words to this song in high school and it often plays inside my head. Love it! When I feel a dark cloud over my head I usually go with the flow and mope around for a while. Something bright usually appears to snap me out of it! And if it doesn’t I just do one of my favourite things (Ha, there’s another song!) 🙂
